The UK economy may be struggling, but young small business owners remain bullish on growth and investment, particularly in technology. According to a new survey by Purbeck Insurance Services,  70% of small business owners have either secured or plan to secure funding in 2025—more than doubling from 30% in 2024.

More strikingly, over half (51%) are willing to sign personal guarantees, demonstrating strong confidence in their ventures despite financial risks.

Young Entrepreneurs Lead the Charge
The 25-34 age group is the most active in securing finance, with 76% planning to access funding this year. This comes as a contrast to wider reports from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), which highlights declining business confidence. Instead, these younger entrepreneurs see technology investment as the key to success.

Where Is the Money Going?
Among small business owners securing finance:

✅ Technology investment – the top priority for growth
✅ Equipment purchases – expanding operational capacity
✅ Business acquisitions – 28% plan to use funding to acquire another business
✅ Cash flow support – up to 41% from 32% last year
✅ Debt repayment – 20% are using funds to settle outstanding debts

Most businesses are securing between £100K–£200K, with only 9% seeking less than £50K, indicating a strong appetite for scaling operations.

The Bigger Picture: What This Means for UK SMEs

Despite economic uncertainty, these findings suggest UK small businesses are resilient and forward-thinking. The willingness of many to back their ventures with personal guarantees reflects a commitment to growth, innovation, and long-term success.

For lenders, investors, and policymakers, this shift presents both opportunities and challenges—ensuring that finance is accessible while managing potential risks.
