The European DIGITAL SME Alliance hosted the second annual DIGITAL SME Summit, highlighting the pivotal role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in achieving Europe’s technological sovereignty and advancing its leadership in digital innovation. Held at the European Economic and Social Committee, the summit attracted over 600 participants, including policymakers, innovators, and industry leaders from across the continent.

Throughout the day, discussions revolved around the unique contributions of tech SMEs to making digital markets more competitive and fostering an inclusive, innovation-driven economy. Experts emphasized how these enterprises are creating targeted, niche solutions that align with European values while spearheading progress across industries.

Artificial intelligence (AI) took centre stage during the debates, with participants stressing the need to move beyond regulation to stimulate investment, build industrial capacity, and position Europe as a leader in AI foundation models. Industry representatives also raised concerns about market concentration, advocating for a fairer competitive landscape that enables smaller innovators to thrive.

The summit reinforced the role of digital SMEs as a driving force in Europe’s quest for technological sovereignty and innovation, paving the way for a more independent and robust digital ecosystem.
