CYBER NEWSBYTE: UK Faces Unprecedented Surge in Data Breaches: 60M Accounts Compromised in 2024

The UK experienced a staggering 14-fold increase in online account breaches in 2024, with nearly 60 million user accounts compromised—equating to two breaches every second, according to Surfshark’s latest report.

Despite the UK’s reputation for strong cybersecurity measures, social media platforms remain a weak link. The country ranked 9th globally for breaches, a sharp rise from 6th place in 2023, when only 4.2 million accounts were affected. In contrast, Ireland saw just 4.9 million breaches.

Why Are UK Users So Vulnerable?
Experts warn that stolen credentials are fuelling cybercrime, from crypto scams to ticket fraud. “Even e-secure countries like the UK struggle with social media breaches,” notes Luís Costa, Surfshark’s Research Lead.

With 847 breached accounts per 1,000 residents, 8 out of 10 Brits may have had their data compromised in 2024. This highlights an urgent need for stronger account security and better public awareness.
