1). DATA PROTECTION: UK Government Proposes Data Reforms with Input from ICO The UK government has unveiled new proposals aimed at updating the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), focusing on data processing, automated decision-making, and international data transfers. This marks the third attempt at reforming data laws in as many years under the Labour Party’s leadership. The latest initiative, the Data Use and Access Bill, introduced by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, is currently under review in the House of Lords. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has provided feedback on the bill, expressing support for provisions that would strengthen its enforcement capabilities. The proposed changes aim to improve consistency in data breach reporting, aligning standards between the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations and the UK GDPR
2). SME CYBERSECURITY: Probrand Research Reveals Alarming Cybersecurity Gaps in UK Small Businesses Recent research by leading technology services provider Probrand, has uncovered significant Cybersecurity vulnerabilities among UK Small Businesses. The study, which analyzed hundreds of Small to Mid-sized companies, found that 69% are using weak passwords to access critical documents and internal platforms. The Birmingham-based firm’s in-depth Cyber-risk assessments revealed further alarming findings. Nearly half (47%) of Small Businesses lacked updated anti-virus software to detect potential hacking attempts, while 15% had no firewall in place to safeguard against Cyberattacks. Training gaps were also highlighted, with 48% of businesses failing to provide Cybersecurity awareness training to employees, leaving them ill-equipped to identify risks when using company devices.
3). WHAT IS CYBERSECURITY COMPLIANCE – Protecting Data and Building Trust – CyberKPI: Compliance is to adhere to standards and regulations set by law or authority groups. Organizations must achieve Compliance by establishing controls that protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information, with a focus on SMEs. For instance, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe outlines specific requirements for the protection of personal data, making it vital for businesses to comply with these standards to avoid legal repercussions
