1). NEW TECHNOLOGIES: REPAIR SHOP BACK BT IN SMALL BUSINESS REASEARCH – Popular BBC TV craftsman Will Kirk has teamed up with BT to encourage UK’s much-loved heritage businesses to go digital – as new research from the communications giant, shows two in three small firms (67%) say technology is keeping their traditions alive. The BT study shows that the UK’s Small Business community has been investing in technology this year, with most seizing the opportunity to boost their networks and digital tools in 2024. Four in five small firms (78%) say they have introduced new technology in the last 12 months. The top investment was a new website (50%), followed by increased cybersecurity (48%) and social media (45%). Two in five (40%) describe their small business as being a tech company, or one driven by advanced technology such as AI, Robotics, or Data Analytics.
2). INCIDENT REPORTING REQUIREMENTS: EU Expands Cyber Incident Reporting Requirements to Strengthen Public Electronic Communications Security. CSIS (Center for Strategic & International Studies) has produced a definitive list of Primary European Cyber incident reporting requirements. The European Union (EU) has reinforced its commitment to cybersecurity by strengthening requirements for reporting cyber incidents affecting public electronic communications. Under Article 40 of the European Electronic Communications Code (EECC), incidents compromising the “confidentiality, authenticity, integrity, and availability” of critical assets such as networks, services, and transmitted or processed data must be reported to the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) “without undue delay.”
3). CYBER MITIGATION: Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) face numerous cyber threats that can jeopardise their operations. The most common types of cyber attacks include Phishing, malware, Ransomware, and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. Phishing attacks are particularly concerning, as they exploit social engineering tactics to obtain employee credentials or sensitive information. For example, a small business may fall prey to an email that appears legitimate, prompting employees to divulge passwords or financial details, leading to severe consequences.
